It was finally Thursday. Channing had tried to play it cool all day Sunday, but he had broken down and called Lane before evening arrived, wanting to hear his voice.

The men had been texting back and forth all week, and his excitement about seeing Lane again had reached a peak that morning. Everything was in place, and now Channing was on his way to pick up his date.

Lane had insisted that Channing tell him where they were going and that they should just meet there, but Channing was the traditional sort. His mother had taught him to be a gentleman, and after his performance the other night, he wanted to show Lane that he was dependable boyfriend material. After spending only a short amount of time with him, Channing knew Lane didn’t suffer fools. Though he was no fool, Channing was determined not to do anything that might jeopardize their very new relationship.

He pulled up outside a tidy looking townhouse in the old part of Waterside and honked the horn of his Range Rover twice. Now that the moment was so close, he was suddenly filled with dread that Lane might have changed his mind; however, less than a minute later, he emerged. Channing eyed him appreciatively. He had only seen Lane in suits before, but he looked equally good in the fitted navy chinos, cable-knit cream sweater, and structured camel peacoat he wore now.

Lane slid into the passenger seat, greeting Channing with a warm smile and saying, “So, will you tell me where we’re going now?”

His apprehension was adorable. Trying to draw out the mystery, Channing ignored his comment and said, “Hi, Moose, nice to see you! Oh, hi, Lane, it’s nice to see you, too!” in a poor impression of Lane’s voice.

“You’re the worst!” Lane whined.

“Oh, am I?” Channing loved getting a rise out of him. “You waited almost a week to find out - you can wait a little longer. Plus, you said you would trust me, remember?”

“Hmph,” Lane grumbled, knowing he was defeated.

Channing continued, “Also, I have a rule for this date.”

“A rule? That sounds more like something I would do,” he looked bewildered.

Smiling, Channing replied, “So you should understand, then. The rule is no phones.” He held out his hand palm up.

“But...but, I need—”

“No buts. You’re off the clock, right?”

“Well, yes, bu—”

“I said no buts! Tonight is about you and me, no one else. Hand it over.” Reluctantly, Lane placed his phone in Channing’s hand. He gave Lane an evil grin as he pressed his thumb to the power button, then handed it back. “There, now no one can interrupt us.”

“You just might be the death of me,” Lane shook his head, but he was smiling.

Resting his right hand lightly on Lane’s thigh and gripping the wheel with his left, finally out of the sling, Channing headed off to the secret destination.
